Languages and Interpreter Services
In Canada, one out of 10 homes communicates in a language other than English. If you do not understand or speak English, you may want to bring a trusted relative or friend with you to help interpret at the hospital.
To help you, Humber River Regional Hospital subscribes to the AT&T Language Line Service. This provides us with access to trained interpreters who can speak more than 145 languages - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Usually we are able to connect with an interpreter within 45 seconds. Any member of your health care team can access this service.
We also have staff members who speak many languages and can act as interpreters. If necessary, we can also get interpreters from our community who speak in any language or sign language. Please let us know ahead of time if you need any of these services.

Patient Representative
A hospital can be a confusing and distressing place for patients and their families. To help patients, families and hospital staff with inquiries, compliments or concerns, we have added the service of a Patient Representative. This staff member has a primary responsibility to you, and an obligation to let you know of your rights and responsibilities, and assist on your behalf.
Our Patient Representative works as a link between patients, families and hospital staff. They can direct you to the person(s) in charge of your care or the care of your family member or friend. They will ensure that patient and family needs are heard and given full consideration, will explain hospital regulations and procedures, and provide patients and families with feedback on follow-up, actions taken and results. This service is a valuable way to help the organization improve in ways that are important to patients and their families.
The Patient Representative can be contacted at (416) 243-4697.
Pharmacies
Retail pharmacies are located in the main lobby of the Church St. site and on the second level of the Professional Building at the Finch Ave. site.

Telephones are available beside each bed in patient rooms (some exceptions apply.) All local calls are free. All long distance calls must be charged to your calling card, home number or called collect. Phone cards, available in $10 and $20 values, can be purchased near the main floor telephones.
Pay phones are also located on some floors and in the lobbies.
Outside long distance calls can be dialed directly into patient rooms. Patients must provide family and friends with the main hospital number and the extension number that appears on the telephone beside the patient bed.
In consideration of other patients, incoming calls are blocked between the hours of 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. Urgent after-hours calls will be directed to the Patient Care Unit.
